A sensational Suffolk barn wedding with one of my favourite couples at one of my favourite wedding venues.
Some weddings stick with you for all the right reasons, and Fran and Andy’s day at Alpheton Hall Barns was one of those. Having photographed at Alpheton Hall several times before (in fact I hit a staggering SEVEN visits in 2024) the venue has started to feel like a second home. Nic and Carol, who run the venue, are practically my surrogate work parents at this point. The warm welcome I always receive is second to none, and I’ll admit, the personalised sign with my name on it under the designated photographer's parking space makes me feel a mix of pride and a guilt every time. Nic put it up as a joke after my fifth visit and yet somehow there it remained - hilarious, but from what I gather it's caused some contention with a few of the other visiting photographers. 😂🤦🏼♂️
Fran and Andy—or "Frandy", as their officiant endearingly slipped during the ceremony —were one of my absolute favourite couples of the year. From the moment I met them, I immediately wanted to be their friend, so I'd been looking forward to this one for a while and it absolutely didn't disappoint. My job is hardly boring but it was honestly like going to a friends' wedding rather than dragging myself in for a long day at work.
Fran got ready with her favourite humans in a gorgeous rented house tucked away in the remote Suffolk countryside. So remote in fact, that I got a little lost on the way. 🤦🏼♂️ Fran’s flower crown, made by the incredibly talented Nicola at Wild & Mae (another frequent flyer at Alpheton), was a standout feature and complemented her look perfectly. Meanwhile, Andy prepared with his friends & family at a separate location, and they both added a sweet, personal touch to the morning by writing heartfelt letters to each other and sending gifts, which isn’t something I see often but it was a lovely gesture. It was especially handy for Heartwood Films, the fantastic husband & wife videographers who were capturing the day alongside me; they managed to persuade Frandy to both to read their letters aloud and then surreptitiously worked it into the video from a safe distance. 👌🏻
We had the ceremony outdoors in the woods at Alpheton's woodland area which felt utterly magical. There’s something about being surrounded by nature that adds an extra layer of enchantment to a wedding which you just don't get with indoor ceremonies. Somehow to me, they always feel a little bit more special (sorry if you're planning an indoor one, I'm sure it'll be lovely). Fran and Andy’s vows were heartfelt, and the atmosphere was joyful from start to finish as you could see how utterly invested their friends and family were in the relationship. Afterward, we headed to the arboretum lawn to throw stuff at them as per tradition.
The celebrations then moved to the Stackyard Garden round the side of the wedding barn for welcome drinks, where guests mingled and played croquet. The croquet balls probably spent almost as much time in the bushes as they did in play, leading to some entertaining retrieval missions, which I enjoyed more than the games themselves.
For dinner, we headed through to the main barn which had been laid out with long banquet tables - a setup I hadn’t seen at Alpheton before, but one that worked beautifully. I always think banqueting layout has a really nice "here's an exciting thing" kind of vibe and I particularly liked the lack of top table so the couple could sit right in amongst their guests. The elegant decor (which included some awesome golden cutlery and charger plates for the tables) gave the space a rich, luxurious feel. Fran, who took charge of the styling, absolutely nailed it. Food was by the sensational chef Amy from Stour Valley Catering who consistently produces outstanding food and in particular makes some of the best deserts I've ever had at a wedding.
The cake was crafted by Lillie at Marnie’s Bakery. I've said a few times before that Lillie makes the best wedding cakes I've ever tasted and I absolutely stand by that statement. Every time I try another one (and I'm easily into the triple digits now) I find myself wondering if I've over-played my hand with this claim, and then one of hers pops up and I'm reminded that no, she is absolutely the very best in the business by miles. I actually did a video with her a while back if you're interested- sorry, this is supposed to be about Frandy, not cake - I just get really excited by good cake. Back to the wedding...
Nic, ever the showman, orchestrated Fran and Andy’s entrance to the reception with his trademark flair: curtains, smoke machines, disco lights, and a killer soundtrack. A moment of honesty here; it’s not something I’d have chosen myself, but it’s always executed so brilliantly at Alpheton that the energy it brings is undeniable. Most of my aversion tbh though is based around the fact that personal attention makes me die a little inside. At my own wedding I struggled a lot with the fact that I just felt so observed. "I have to spend the whole day with people who keep looking at and talking to me? No thank you." Anyway. They liked it, it looked cool. Shut up Joshua.
After dinner, with the sun beginning to set, Fran and Andy stepped away for a quiet moment together. We wandered over to the back field behind the hall where the golden light was doing its thing. I don't know if you've noticed, but Suffolk is particularly good at sunsets and this was a pretty epic example. As always, I kept things relaxed and natural, just photographing them from a distance as they wandered about and just enjoyed being with each other. No awkward posing, just genuine moments of connection and love.
And then Nic wandered over and asked if they'd like to have a go on his kids' zip wire.
You've never seen a bride in her dress on a zip wire before have you? No, me neither. It was pretty surreal.
As night fell, the Stackyard Garden came alive again with laughter and games. Fran and Andy’s handmade activities, (including beanbag toss and a miniature golf course hand-created by a friend of theirs with each hole named after a place special to them), kept guests entertained before the party moved back inside.
And I just want to point out Fran's left hand in the photo below in case you don't spot it yourself... 😂
Fran and Andy’s first dance kicked off the evening festivities, setting the tone for what turned into an epic celebration. Their guests were incredible—full of energy, joy, and ready to party. It’s always a privilege to document such genuine happiness, and this was one of those weddings where I was honestly disappointed it was over. There was a bit of a side bonus for this one too in that the vendor team was pretty much entirely made up of either people I know really well or actual friends so for one day. When you're self employed and you spend most of the time sitting in a little office by yourself, days like this really give you a huge boost.
Frandy’s wedding was a perfect reflection of their personalities—warm, fun, and full of love. Working with them felt like working with old friends, and it was hard to say goodbye at the end of the day, particularly knowing I may never see them again given the distance between us. I needed up update my sample wedding album recently though so I went and got their wedding printed in a special album just for me, so now they can sit on my desk forever (or at least until I inevitably spill something on their faces). Book me and you too could be immortalised in print to live in my office - not at all creepy and stalkerish...
